Roofing Clips and Why You Need Them

by David Campbell

The roofing clips you see in this video are also known as H-Clips or panel clips. They are shaped like an H so H-Clips are a fitting and descriptive name. As the sheeting is being installed on a new home or the resheeting of an existing home these clips go between the 4 x 8 OSB sheets on all side and end up creating a gap all the way around between the sheets. This gap ends up being about a quarter of an inch. The novice roofer might think it strange to leave this gap and could make the mistake of installing the sheets butted up against each other.

Unfortunately, this error won’t show up until the shingles are on and the job is done. The sheeting is going to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Without the H-Clips the sheeting is going to buckle at the edges and it will show up as obvious lines in the roof shingles. These lines/bumps can lead to leaks as well. Another benefit to the clips is the support they provide the sheeting. Since they slide onto each edge of the OSB they essentially lock them together and you have less deflection when walking the roof or during a snow load.
