Dayton, OH- The Gem City

Prior to its founding by the Thompson Party in 1796, Dayton, OH saw a number of Native American tribes call the space home. This area, nestled in the Miami Valley region acted as a central hub for southwest Ohio trade to and from the region courtesy of the Mad River Road, built by Daniel C. Cooper in 1797 connecting back to Cincinnati. Learn more about this "Gem" of a city and how you can become part of it below.
The History
After it's founding, Dayton would be officially incorporated into the state of Ohio in 1805 - gaining its name from famed American Revolutionary War captain, and signer of the U.S. Constitution, Jonathan Dayton. Dayton owned quite a bit of land in the area as well, so it all made sense. Dayton is quite well known for its famous denizens, including the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Charles F. Kettering and more. Outside of being the birthplace of aviation, the area has quite an exciting nickname - the "Gem City" - but historians aren't positive where that came from. Some say it's from a famed 1845 racehorse from the region but we do know it was further immortalized in Dunbar's poem titled: "Toast to Dayton."
