Roof Vents and Soffit Vents - Do You Need Them?

by David Campbell

Today’s code requires plenty of attic ventilation via soffit vents and roof vents. Years ago builders didn’t fully understand just how important this was and sometimes older homes with inadequate venting suffer from several related issues. Excessive heat can build up in the attic which in turn leads to a build up of heat in the shingles.  Heat is an enemy of shingles and shortens their life. This added heat in the attic makes the ceiling warmer and causes you to run the a/c longer using more electric and shortening its life as well.  Another common issue with inadequate venting is humidity build up causing mold on the sheeting and over time will deteriorate it leading to a ‘spongy’ roof.  Mold spores in the attic find their way inside the living area of the home as well.

Fresh air circulation is the key. Soffit vents in the eaves of the home working in conjunction with a ridge vent or box vents on the roof allow for this circulation. Air is drawn in the soffits, rises through the attic and out the roof vents.  If your attic feels very cold in the winter it should! That’s because that outside air is circulating through as designed.
