How Pop-up Drains Keep Water Away From Your Foundation

by David Campbell

Downspouts dump water right at the base of your home. Splash blocks under downspouts direct water away but they can only take it out a few extra feet. They help but they are not always enough. Pop-up drainage emitters are often the answer because they can help get the damaging water much further away. They can be located as far away from the house as you wish. Pop-ups are nothing more than a 4 inch elbow with a one-way button in the middle that ‘pops up’ when water from the gutters pushes it open. Once the water stops flowing, the button closes to keep out debris and prevent a trip hazard.

To install, you get rid of the splash blocks and bury a drain line directly off of the downspout to anywhere in the yard you want the water from your gutters to go.The only limitation is you can’t run them uphill. They must be installed in a path that has some downward slope. Connect a pop-up at the end level with the ground and you’re in business. No more splash blocks to mow or trim around and rain water is now carried far away from the foundation!
