Aluminum Wiring
Have you heard bad things about homes with aluminum wiring? If your home was built between 1965 and 1972 it may have aluminum wiring in the branch circuits. Copper was expensive at this time and aluminum became a cheaper alternative. Unmodified, it’s considered unsafe and has a 55 times greater chance of having a fire issue vs copper. The problem is not the aluminum wiring itself, it conducts electricity extremely well. The problem is in the connections at the switches and outlets. The aluminum expands and contracts at a high rate and develops loose connections.
The good news is you don’t have to rewire the whole house. Since the issue lies at the connection, using UL approved connectors will eliminate the problem and make the aluminum as safe as copper. Most people are shocked (pun intended) to hear that the line coming to their home from the power pole and into their breaker box is still aluminum even in new construction today. Aluminum is cheaper and for the main service line provisions are made to make it safe. The branch circuits coming out of the breaker box and into your home where all the connection are, are made of copper.
