Termites
Termites are just one of the several wood destroying insects that we have to watch out for during our real estate inspections in Dayton, OH. We have subterranean termites here. This means their colony is in the ground. They forage, underground, up to 100 yards away from the nest looking for cellulose found in wood. Your house, shed and deck tastes great to them. Like tiny vampires they don’t like the light. Other than during swarms you won’t see them out and about. They stay hidden in their tunnels. If they need to traverse a concrete foundation to reach wood they will build tiny mud tunnels to travel. They build 24 hrs a day. These ⅛ inch wide tunnels are easily overlooked.
Termites are light colored like a cream or beige. Often confused with an ant, their bodies are not segmented like an ant but rather, they have no waist. Actually, carpenter ants and termites are mortal enemies. They can compete for the same food source and the termites will lose this battle. There are various treatments to get rid of these pests and you’ll find information on the Sentricon Termite Elimination System in my blog on this site.
