House Wraps

by David Campbell

You've seen it before when you are driving down the road and you notice a home being built and it is covered in a plastic looking wrap of some kind that may have the giant words Tyvek, Typar, HomeGuard or some other name plastered all over it. Then, a few days later the house is covered in vinyl siding, brick or cedar and you are wondering what happened to that plastic looking covering you saw before. Well, it's still there under the siding. Tyvek may be the most popular brand of house wrap and its main job is to provide a moisture barrier against condensation and water that finds its way behind the siding of the home. It also helps to seal out drafts as well to keep the inside environment more consistent and comfortable.

House wraps were not always used in the past but now they have become a standard. Over time penetrations (windows, spigots, light fixtures, etc.) in the  siding can allow water a way in and  the underlying sheeting and framing of the home can be damaged. I've seen slightly compromised siding removed from a home without house wrap underneath only to find extensive damage to the sheeting.
