Foundation Anchors

by David Campbell

If you’ve ever wondered what holds you home to its foundation in high winds and during an earthquake you are not alone. I get that question from time to time.

A home can weight about 200 pounds per sq ft so the average home can easily weigh a couple hundred tons but that’s not enough to hold it to the foundation in high winds. Foundation anchors are the key. These are threaded rods 8 or 10 inches long with an “L” bent into the last few inches. This “L” is buried into the top of the foundation before the concrete sets up.

Next, holes are drilled in the sill plate (bottom board of the studded wall) to allow it to fit down over the foundation anchors.  A washer and nut are then threaded on to the anchor to provide a firm physical connection for the home. This will allow the home to survive all but the very worst natural disaster.
