Propane vs Natural Gas as a Home Heating Alternative

by David Campbell

Interestingly propane is part of ‘raw’ natural gas when it is pumped out of the ground. Then it is separated  during processing and sold off to propane dealers. Propane has twice the BTU energy of natural gas so it is actually more efficient energy-wise. If a natural gas furnace burns 97 cubic feet of gas in an hour that same furnace would only burn 40 cubic feet of propane.

Even though it takes twice as much natural gas than propane to heat your home it is typically cheaper in the end to heat with natural gas because it is significantly cheaper per cubic foot. Natural gas is delivered via a network of existing underground pipes, this helps give it a savings advantage because propane has to be delivered by truck and stored in a tank at your house. Propane prices tend to come down during the summer months so buying early can save money. I’m always available to help if you need assistance with real estate in Beavercreek, Kettering, Bellbrook and the surrounding Dayton OH area.
